The Maxim Defense Roller Delayed Buffer System changes a compatible conventional AR-9 from simple blowback to roller-delayed blowback without replacing the barrel or adding a breech-locking mechanism. Bolt thrust drives a pusher piece that forces spherical rollers out of a recess in the guide rod and against an inclined control surface. That geometry spikes resistance at the start of the rearward stroke and slows the bolt, without locking the breech. The mechanism sits in the recoil assembly behind an otherwise unlocked bolt. An MP5 is roller-delayed too, but its rollers act at the breech between the bolt head and the trunnion; neither system is a locked breech.
Installation depends on the bolt, not just the receiver extension. The 9mm bolt must remain full length while leaving an open central channel for the RDB guide rod. On many AR-9 bolts that means removing a pinned central mass. A short bolt or a bolt that keeps its central channel blocked will not give the guide rod the travel path the system needs.
Maxim sells carbine and CQB receiver-extension versions at the same direct price. Both are for 9mm AR platforms only. The manufacturer excludes other calibers and does not rate the RDB for full-auto fire, so it belongs in a semi-automatic 9mm build with a verified bolt path rather than as a universal PCC buffer.
