Overview

The FN 509 Tactical is the suppressor-host and duty variant of FN's striker-fired 9mm line, and it is the most optic-agnostic production pistol on the market. The 4.5-inch cold-hammer-forged stainless barrel ships threaded 1/2x28 from the factory with a protective thread cap, so any 9mm suppressor with a standard Nielsen booster mounts with no gunsmith work.

The Low-Profile Optics Mounting System (LPOM) is the other signature feature. FN includes four factory plates in the box that cover the Trijicon RMR, Leupold DeltaPoint Pro, Holosun 509T, and Docter footprints, which collectively fit the Trijicon RMR, Holosun 507C, 509T, Leupold DPP, Vortex Venom, Burris FastFire, and Sig Romeo1 Pro with no slide milling. Apex and FN also sell LPOM plates for the Aimpoint ACRO and Shield RMSc footprints. Factory suppressor-height three-dot night sights co-witness through any mounted optic.

The 509 Tactical ships with two 24-round magazines plus a 17-round flush-fit mag, and the 24-round mag kit includes three grip sleeves that blend into Compact, Midsize, or Full-Size frames. The ambidextrous slide stop and magazine release, full-length Picatinny rail, and interchangeable backstraps round out a complete duty package. At roughly $899-$999 street, the 509 Tactical delivers factory suppressor-ready and optic-ready capability that costs $200-$400 to replicate on a Glock 17 or SIG P320.

Key Features

  • 4.5-inch cold-hammer-forged stainless barrel, 1/2x28 threaded
  • Low-Profile Optics Mounting System with 4 factory plates (RMR, DPP, 509T, Docter)

  • Ambidextrous slide stop and magazine release
  • Full-length Picatinny accessory rail

Pros

  • +Factory threaded barrel eliminates $180-$250 in gunsmith work or aftermarket threaded barrels
  • +LPOM plate system fits essentially any mainstream pistol red dot with no slide milling
  • +24-round factory mags and suppressor-height sights ship standard
  • +Full ambidextrous controls work for left- and right-handed shooters
  • +FN's proven striker-fired reliability record across US duty and LE contracts

Cons

  • Factory trigger is heavier and mushier than the Walther PDP or CZ P-10 F

  • Smaller aftermarket than Glock or SIG P320 for frame and slide work
  • 24-round mags protrude noticeably even with the grip sleeve installed
