The FN 309 MRD is FN America's first budget-focused pistol, a $549 optic-ready 9mm built around accessibility rather than the premium duty pricing that defines the 509 line. It debuted at the 2026 SHOT Show as FN's answer to the value-tier carry market dominated by the Smith & Wesson Shield Plus, Ruger MAX-9, and Taurus GX4, and it leads with two ergonomic features aimed at shooters who struggle with slide and magazine manipulation.

The headline feature is the easy-rack slide. FN engineered the 309's internal-hammer, single-action-only action so the slide racks roughly 25 percent easier than the striker-fired FN 509 Tactical, and the proprietary polymer magazines load with about 40 percent less spring force. That combination targets the same buyers the Smith & Wesson Shield EZ and Ruger Security-380 Lite Rack were built for, but in a full-power 9mm rather than a softer chambering. The 3.8-inch barrel, 7.4-inch overall length, and 22.5-ounce weight put it in compact carry territory.

The 309 ships optics-ready with a direct-mount slide cut that accepts Shield RMSc and Leupold DeltaPoint Pro footprint red dots without an adapter plate, a cost-saving choice that keeps the optic seated low. Iron sights are a green fiber-optic front and a U-notch rear. The reviewed configuration is the non-manual-safety model in black (SKU 66-102366), and it ships with one 16-round flush magazine and one 20-round extended magazine. FN also lists a manual-safety SKU (66-102378) and 10-round options for restricted states, with availability varying by retailer and state. Early FN testing put roughly 1,200 rounds through a single pistol without a reported malfunction, though a production-gun review is still pending.
