FN Five-seveN MRD

The FN Five-seveN MRD is the optic-ready version of FN's original 5.7x28mm pistol, the gun that created the modern 5.7 handgun category and still sets the benchmark every challenger gets measured against. It streets around $849 and runs near $1,060 at major retailers, putting it above the Ruger-57 and PSA Rock 5.7, and it earns that position with a refined trigger, a 20+1 standard capacity, and FN's long reliability record with the chambering.

The MRD designation marks the headline upgrade over the legacy Five-seveN: a factory optic plate system milled into the slide. Rather than a single proprietary cut, the MRD plate kit lets the shooter mount most common micro red dot footprints, so a Trijicon RMR or Holosun 507C drops on without aftermarket slide work. The adjustable iron sights co-witness through the optic, and the 4.8-inch barrel keeps the long sight radius that has always made the Five-seveN easy to shoot accurately at distance.

The 5.7x28mm cartridge is the whole point. It launches a light bullet at rifle-adjacent velocity from a handgun, producing flat trajectory, minimal recoil, and 20 rounds of capacity in a grip most shooters can still wrap a hand around. The Five-seveN ships with 20-round magazines, with 10-round magazines available for restricted states. The threaded barrel uses a metric M10x1.0 RH muzzle thread rather than the 1/2x28 standard, so running a common 5.7 suppressor takes an M10x1.0-to-1/2x28 adapter or an FN-specific mount. The tradeoffs are cost and ammunition price, both higher than a comparable 9mm, but no 5.7 pistol matches the Five-seveN's combination of pedigree, capacity, and proven function.
