Caldwell

VelociRadar Chronograph

Caldwell's $599 Chirp radar chronograph generates a true muzzle velocity, a ballistic coefficient, and a custom one-shot DOPE chart out to 100 inches of drop. The big-button, rubber-keyed UI is the friendliest of the radar chronographs.

Overview

The Caldwell VelociRadar uses Chirp (FMCW) radar instead of pulsed Doppler, which is what lets it track the bullet far enough downrange to derive both a ballistic coefficient and a custom drop chart from a single shot. Most chronographs hand you a muzzle velocity and stop. The VelociRadar hands you muzzle velocity, BC, and a yard-by-yard drop chart out to 100 inches of total drop, then exports that to the Caldwell app for storage and comparison across rifles and loads. The interface is the friendliest radar UI on the market: large rubber buttons, traditional menu layout, no touchy gestures. The trade-off is the unit is bigger and heavier than the Garmin and Athlon, and Shooting Illustrated noted mixed results on shotgun slugs and pellets.

Key Features

  • Chirp radar (FMCW) for downrange tracking and BC calculation
  • Generates a custom drop chart from a single shot
  • Caldwell ballistics app stores rifle and load profiles for cross-session comparison
  • Large, clearly labeled rubber buttons for cold-hand range use
  • Bluetooth pairing, sunlight-readable display, lithium rechargeable battery

Pros

  • +Only sub-$1,000 radar chrono that outputs a custom DOPE chart from one shot
  • +Friendliest user interface among radar chronographs
  • +Caldwell app supports multiple rifles and loads for long-term records
  • +BC calculation rivals LabRadar LX for serious reloaders

Cons

  • Heavier and larger than Garmin and Athlon Doppler units
  • Mixed reviews on shotgun slugs and air rifle pellets
  • Chirp radar setup is more finicky than pure Doppler at the muzzle
