Best MPVO Scopes for DMR, Hunting & Mid-Range Rifles

An MPVO is a variable rifle scope that starts above true 1x and reaches roughly 12x to 18x. That is the whole definition, and it is a category defined by what it is not: not an LPVO, because it gives up the 1x setting that makes both-eyes-open close-range shooting work, and not a precision scope, because it stops well short of the 5-25x and 6-36x glass built for known-distance and PRS stages.

In practice the category runs from 1.5-12x through 4-16x, with 3-18x models included when they are built for a general-purpose, hunting, or DMR rifle rather than a dedicated precision chassis. The seven scopes ranked above cover that span exactly: 1.5-12x36, 2-12x44, 2-12x42, 3-18x44, 3-18x50, 4-12x36, and 4-16x42.

The new PLxC 2.5-20x48 reaches beyond this guide's upper magnification band and weighs 30.05 ounces. For that step into larger precision glass, see the PLxC 2.5-20x48 and 4.5-36x56 comparison.

The reason this middle band exists is that a 16-inch or 18-inch semi-auto asked to identify and hit targets from 50 to 600 yards is badly served at both extremes. A 1-6x runs out of resolution past 300 yards. A 5-25x has too small a field of view to find a target quickly and too much weight to carry. A medium power variable optic is the answer to that specific problem, which is why designated marksman rifles and mid-range hunting rigs converged on it. For a worked example of a rifle built around this class of optic, see the MK12 SPR build guide.

For a DMR or a tactical semi-auto, buy first focal plane and pick on the low end: the Primary Arms PLxC 1.5-12x36 at 1.5x, the Vector Optics Continental 2-12x44 RAR at 2x, or the Vortex Strike Eagle 3-18x44 at 3x. For a hunting rifle, buy the Arken OUTRIDER 2-12x42. Those two sentences cover most of the decision, and the rest of this section explains the four specifications that drive them.

Low-end magnification sets close-range usability. The PLxC's 1.5x is the widest view in this field, and it is the single reason it ranks first for a general-purpose rifle. The Continental and the OUTRIDER open at 2x. The Strike Eagle and the Steiner H6Xi open at 3x, which is enough for a supported shooter and thin for a moving one. The EOTech Vudu 4-12x36 and Nightforce ATACR 4-16x42 F1 share the highest 4x minimum in the ranking; both are aimed at shooters whose closest realistic target is still a few hundred yards out.

Top-end reach is where the 18x scopes earn their weight. The PLxC, Continental, and OUTRIDER stop at 12x. The ATACR reaches 16x. The Strike Eagle and the H6Xi reach 18x, the ceiling of this category. Eighteen power buys target detail and correction feedback, and it costs field of view and body size: the Strike Eagle is 26.6 ounces and the H6Xi is 27.4 ounces, against 19.7 ounces for the PLxC.

Focal plane is a fit question, not a ranking. A first-focal-plane reticle grows and shrinks with the image, so its subtensions stay valid at every magnification. That is what a DMR shooter needs, because they hold rather than dial and they change power constantly. Six of the seven scopes here do that: the PLxC's ACSS Raptor 5.56/.308 Yard Gen 2, the Continental's VET-RAR 2, the Strike Eagle's EBR-7C MRAD, the Vudu's MR5 or MD5 MRAD, the H6Xi's Steiner MHR, and the ATACR's MIL or MOA options.

The Arken OUTRIDER 2-12x42 is the other side of that split, and it is deliberate. Arken builds and sells it as an all-round hunting scope. Its second-focal-plane reticle stays the same apparent size at every power, so the aiming point never thickens or thins as you zoom, and its subtensions are valid at the magnification the maker specifies. Its parallax is fixed at 100 yards and its elevation turret has no zero stop, because a hunting scope is zeroed once and then held, not dialed and returned. Judged as the hunting optic it is, the OUTRIDER gives you a 2x low end for timber, 12x for a deliberate shot across open ground, six-setting illumination on the FDR reticle, a 30mm tube that fits common rings, and 23.8 ounces. Judged against a DMR scope it would look like a different tool, because it is one.

Turret system follows the same split. If you dial, the Strike Eagle's RevStop zero stop and locking elevation turret and the ATACR's ZeroHold mechanical return-to-zero are the two picks built for it, and the Strike Eagle backs that with 45 MIL of elevation adjustment. The Continental carries the most travel in the field at 63 MIL or more, though without a zero stop behind it. If you hold, the finer question is units: the PLxC, Continental, Strike Eagle, and Vudu all adjust in 0.1 MIL clicks, which Vortex and EOTech print as 0.1 MRAD on the same turret because a mil and a milliradian are the same angle. The OUTRIDER and H6Xi use 0.25 MOA, and the ATACR is offered either way. Match the click value to the reticle and to whatever your other rifles use, because mixing MIL glass with MOA data is how corrections get lost.

Weight and length decide what the rifle still handles like. The EOTech Vudu 4-12x36 is the outlier: 7.1 inches long and 16.9 ounces, the shortest and lightest optic in the ranking, which is the whole argument for accepting its 4x floor and its 2.4 to 3.1-inch eye relief. At the other end the ATACR is 30 ounces before a 34mm mount. The Continental's four inches of stated eye relief is the most forgiving figure here, which matters on a hard-recoiling host or a shooter who moves between positions. For how these same scopes fare on a large-frame .308 specifically, where recoil, mount placement, and a 9 to 11 pound rifle change the calculus, see the AR-10 and .308 scope guide. For a broader look at how these trade-offs compare across every optic class, work through the optic selection matrix.

The boundary is the low end and the top end, nothing else. An LPVO has a true 1x setting and usually tops out at 6x, 8x, or 10x. An MPVO starts above 1x and tops out between 12x and 18x. A precision scope starts at 5x or higher and runs to 25x or beyond. Those three bands do not overlap in intent even where the magnification numbers nearly touch.

Choose an LPVO when the rifle has to work at conversational distance and the 1x setting is the point, which is the case for home-defense carbines, patrol rifles, and most 5.56 general-purpose guns under 300 yards. Our LPVO rankings cover that class, and the AR-15 scope guide covers the broader question of what belongs on a 5.56 rifle before you have narrowed to a magnification band.

Choose a precision scope when the rifle is built around known distances, wind calls, and dialed elevation, and when weight is a secondary concern. That is a different discipline with different hardware behind it, from the chassis to the rings, and the PRS rifle build guide lays out what that rifle looks like. Choose an MPVO when the rifle is neither: a semi-auto or hunting rifle that has to identify and hit targets from inside 100 yards out to several hundred, carried rather than staged.
