Best Concealed Carry Bags 2026: CCW Fanny Packs & Slings Ranked

Off-body carry fills a niche: hot weather, athletic activities, formal attire, or situations where on-body concealment isn't practical. Done right, a CCW fanny pack or sling bag keeps your pistol accessible and concealed. Done wrong, you're carrying a theft magnet with a gun inside. This guide covers the best options and the safety protocols that make off-body carry viable.

When Off-Body Carry Makes Sense

Off-body carry works for specific scenarios where on-body concealment fails or becomes impractical. For chassis systems that need more space, see our pistol chassis sling bag guide. The Flux Raider 365 Ultralight ($499) is a compact chassis option that fits most fanny packs and sling bags:

  • Hot weather: Minimal clothing (tank tops, shorts) makes IWB printing unavoidable
  • Athletic activities: Running, hiking, cycling where holsters shift or cause discomfort
  • Formal attire: Suits, dresses, or fitted clothing where holsters print
  • Physical limitations: Wheelchair users, those with injuries, or conditions making belt carry painful
  • Motorcycle riding: Jacket positioning makes hip holsters inaccessible
  • Beach/pool: Swimwear with no place for a holster

If none of these apply, stick with on-body carry. A quality IWB holster with a proper gun belt will always be faster and more secure than off-body options. Need more capability? Consider backpack gun setups for rifle-caliber performance.

Concealed Carry Bag Types: Which Shape to Buy

A concealed carry bag is any bag with a dedicated, holster-ready compartment that stays separate from your general storage, so the draw path is never blocked by a water bottle or a laptop. Five shapes cover the category, and the first four trade draw speed against capacity in a straight line: fanny packs are fastest and smallest, chest packs are the most stable under movement, sling bags add real capacity at a small speed cost, and CCW backpacks carry the most and draw the slowest. On the trail a chest pack is the default for a different reason, covered in our hiking and fishing carry guide: a loaded backpack hip belt takes the waist entirely.

The fifth shape, the purse or messenger bag, sits outside that line because it is chosen for dress code rather than for speed or capacity. It is the only option that conceals under fitted business or formal clothing, and it is also the easiest to get wrong: a regular handbag with a pistol loose in a pocket is not concealed carry, it is an unsecured gun in a bag. A purpose-built CCW purse has the same dedicated compartment as every other shape here, loop-lined for a rigid holster and separate from the pocket you dig through for keys.

Pick the shape by how much non-gun gear you actually carry, then pick the model. If a pistol, a spare magazine, and a tourniquet is the whole load, buy a fanny pack; anything more and a sling or a backpack earns its place. Every shape here needs the same two things to be safe: a rigid holster covering the trigger guard, and a practiced draw. Neither is optional, and the purse and messenger designs need them most, since they spend the most time set down rather than worn.

Backpacks are the slowest shape to draw from, so treat one as a transport solution rather than a defensive-carry method. This section covers packs sized for a handgun; if the goal is a folded PDW or a takedown carbine, that is a different build and gets its own guide. The Vertx Ready Pack X and the Vertx Gamut 26L both run a dedicated rear CCW compartment with a repositionable rapid-access pull tab and accept a ballistic insert; the Maxpedition Entity 23 does the same with a body-side access panel that stops anyone else reaching the compartment. If the reason you want a backpack is a folded chassis pistol or a takedown carbine rather than a handgun, our backpack gun setup guide covers that category, and the pistol chassis sling bag guide covers slings sized for a Flux Raider or an MCK. Whatever shape you land on, the holster inside it matters more than the bag; our concealed carry holster guide ranks the on-body options worth comparing against.

Best CCW Fanny Packs

Fanny packs offer the fastest off-body access: your hand is already near the bag when worn at the waist. The tradeoff is capacity: most fit only a pistol, spare mag, and small essentials. Choose based on your pistol size, desired discretion, and whether you need armor compatibility. The 945 Industries QAPS, QAPL, QAPX, and MORPH cover the subcompact-to-full-size range, with an included Kydex holster in each model. Match the bag to the exact pistol, optic, light, and magazine setup rather than treating the size labels as universal fit claims.

Best CCW Sling Bags

Sling bags offer more capacity than fanny packs: room for tablets, water bottles, and gear alongside your pistol. The tradeoff is slightly slower access (the bag hangs at your back or side rather than your front) and single-strap fatigue on long carries. The best CCW slings feature ambidextrous access and mechanisms to prevent accidental exposure.

Holster Selection: Don't Use Soft Holsters

Most CCW bags include soft holsters or rely on velcro straps for retention. These work for carry but create a dangerous reholstering scenario: soft material can collapse into the trigger guard, causing a negligent discharge when you push the gun back in. For compact lights that fit your pistol, check our pistol light guide.

The solution is a rigid holster with hook-and-loop backing that presses into the loop lining of a CCW compartment. The CrossBreed Ohai Modular, Alien Gear Cloak Hook and Loop, StealthGearUSA SG-Fieldcore Pack Holster, and Henry Holsters Scarab all mount this way, each with a shell molded for a specific pistol. A rigid shell keeps its shape when the gun goes back in and gives clear feedback when the pistol is fully seated.

This is non-negotiable safety equipment. If you're going to carry off-body, budget for a rigid holster molded for your pistol alongside the bag.

Holster Requirements for Off-Body Carry
  • Rigid trigger guard coverage: kydex or injection molded
  • Velcro backing: attaches to loop-lined compartments
  • Audible click: confirms gun is fully seated
  • Adjustable retention: tight enough to stay put, loose enough to draw
  • Avoid: Soft nylon/leather holsters, elastic straps, loose carry

Deployment Training: Practice Your Draw

Off-body draw strokes differ from holster draws. You're managing a zipper or flap, positioning the bag, and extracting the gun, all while potentially moving or under stress. Without practice, this takes 5-8 seconds. With practice, you can get it under 3 seconds.

Fanny Pack Draw Sequence

  1. Support hand finds zipper pull (mark with paracord)
  2. Rip zipper open in single motion
  3. Strong hand acquires grip on pistol
  4. Draw straight up, rotate to target
  5. Support hand meets gun for two-handed grip

Sling Bag Draw Sequence

  1. Rotate bag to front (if worn on back)
  2. Support hand finds and operates zipper/release
  3. Strong hand acquires grip
  4. Draw and rotate to target
  5. Support hand joins for two-handed grip

Practice with an unloaded gun (triple-check). Run the sequence 100+ times until it's automatic. Then practice from different positions: sitting, walking, getting out of a car. Mark your zippers with paracord or ranger bands so you can find them by feel.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a concealed carry bag?
A concealed carry bag is a bag with a dedicated, holster-ready compartment kept separate from general storage, so nothing blocks the draw path. The category covers five shapes: fanny packs, chest packs, sling bags, CCW backpacks, and purse or messenger designs. What makes a bag a CCW bag is the compartment itself: loop lining or a velcro field for a rigid holster, and a rapid-access pull tab or hot-pull zipper that opens it in one motion.
What is the best concealed carry bag?
It depends on how much non-gun gear you carry. For a pistol, a spare magazine, and a tourniquet, the Eberlestock Bando ($65) is the best value fanny pack, with a civilian outdoor look and an integrated tourniquet sleeve. For everyday carry with real gear, the Vertx Transit EDC Sling Bag ($184.99) is the best sling thanks to its Gatekeeper retention. For running and hiking, the Hill People Gear Runner's Kit Bag ($105) chest-mounts on an H-harness and does not bounce. For commuting or travel, the Vertx Gamut 26L ($249.99) carries a 16-inch laptop alongside a dedicated CCW compartment.
Is a concealed carry backpack better than a fanny pack?
No, not for defensive access. A CCW backpack carries far more, 20L to 45L versus roughly 2L in a fanny pack, but you have to take it off or swing it around before you can draw, which pushes deployment past four seconds. A fanny pack sits at your waist with your hand already near it and runs 2-3 seconds with practice. Buy a backpack when the job is transporting a pistol or a folded chassis gun with the rest of your daily load; buy a fanny pack or chest pack when access speed is the point.
Is off-body carry safe?
Off-body carry introduces risks that on-body carry doesn't: bags can be snatched, left behind, or accessed by unauthorized people (including children). It's only safe when you maintain constant physical control of the bag, use a dedicated holster that covers the trigger guard, and train your draw stroke extensively. Never leave an off-body carry bag unattended, even briefly.
How much slower is drawing from a fanny pack vs. a holster?
A practiced fanny pack draw takes 2-3 seconds vs. 1-1.5 seconds for a quality IWB holster. Sling bags are slightly slower at 2.5-4 seconds depending on wear position. The deployment gap is significant in reactive situations but acceptable when you have warning (hearing gunshots, observing a developing threat). Practice extensively before relying on off-body carry.
What size pistol fits in a CCW fanny pack?
Most CCW fanny packs fit subcompact to compact pistols (Glock 43, SIG P365, Glock 19). Larger packs like the Vertx SOCP and Eberlestock Bando XL accommodate compact-to-full-size pistols with lights and optics. Always verify dimensions against your specific firearm configuration before purchasing.
Can I run with a CCW fanny pack?
Standard waist-mounted fanny packs bounce significantly during running. For athletic activities, chest-mounted options like the Hill People Gear Runner's Kit Bag provide superior stability. The HPG uses an H-harness that eliminates hip bounce entirely, users report doing burpees without movement. Alternatively, the 5.11 Select Carry Pouch gets decent reviews for jogging.
Do CCW bags look tactical?
Quality varies widely. Tactical-looking bags (MOLLE webbing, camo patterns, 'operator' aesthetics) telegraph that you're carrying. Civilian-friendly options like the Vertx Everyday Fanny Pack 2.0, Eberlestock Bando, and Elite Survival HIP Gunner blend into casual environments. The best grey man bags look like normal outdoor or athletic gear.
Should I use the included holster or buy a kydex holster?
Included soft holsters work, but a rigid holster is the safer choice. Soft holsters can collapse into the trigger guard during reholstering, creating a negligent discharge risk. A molded holster with hook-and-loop backing, such as the CrossBreed Ohai Modular, Alien Gear Cloak Hook and Loop, StealthGearUSA SG-Fieldcore Pack Holster, or Henry Holsters Scarab, holds its shape and presses into the loop lining of a CCW compartment. Each shell is molded for a specific pistol, so order the one that matches your gun and any light or optic.
