Three companies dominate the AR-15 weapon light market, each serving a distinct price tier and design philosophy. Rather than picking one model per brand, this comparison includes the two most relevant offerings from each, because the right light depends heavily on whether you prioritize flood, throw, price, or durability.

The specification table below uses manufacturer-rated ANSI FL1 values on the highest output setting. All lights tested with their recommended rechargeable battery (18650 or proprietary).

The REIN 3.0 wins on combined output. No other light in this comparison delivers both 1,250 lumens of flood and 100,000 candela of throw from a single emitter. That combination means you get enough spill to fill a room while still being able to identify targets at 300+ yards. The SureFire M640DFT Turbo matches the candela but drops to 700 lumens, making it a throw specialist with noticeably less peripheral illumination.

Streamlight takes a different approach. The ProTac 2.0 Rail Mount pushes the highest raw lumen count at 2,000, but its 17,300 candela means the beam is broad and diffused. That is excellent for indoor home defense, room clearing, and close-range work under 50 yards. Past that distance, the lower candela becomes a limitation for target identification.

The SureFire M640DF Scout Light Pro splits the middle with 1,500 lumens and 16,000 candela. Its TIR (Total Internal Reflection) lens creates a characteristically smooth beam with a gradual hotspot-to-spill transition. SureFire fans prefer this beam profile for its even illumination, though the candela numbers suggest it reaches about the same distance as the Streamlight 2.0.

The older Streamlight HL-X sits at 50,000 candela with 1,000 lumens. It remains a competent light, but does not lead in any output category. Cloud Defensive previously offered the OWL, an integrated one-piece design at the same candela, but it has been discontinued in favor of the REIN lineup.

The SureFire M640DFT Turbo leads runtime at 2.75 hours on an 18650, a direct benefit of its lower 700-lumen output. Less energy drawn per second means longer burn time. The REIN 3.0 follows at 95 minutes (1.58 hours) on high, which is impressive given its higher lumen count. Both the HL-X and M640DF cluster around 1.5 hours.

All five lights accept 18650 rechargeable cells and CR123A lithium primaries as backup (dual-fuel).

The Streamlight ProTac 2.0 stands out for its USB-C charging. Rather than removing the battery, you plug a cable directly into the light body. SureFire requires removing the SF18650B for charging via a proprietary cradle. Cloud Defensive uses standard 18650 cells with any third-party charger, which gives you more flexibility for spares.

Cloud Defensive builds the most durable light in this comparison. The REIN 3.0 uses 6061-T6 aluminum with Type III hard coat anodizing, IPX-8 water resistance, and a 3mm-thick borosilicate lens rated for 5.56 sim rounds. The now-discontinued OWL took durability even further with its one-piece integrated design, but the REIN 3.0 is Cloud's current flagship.

SureFire has decades of military contract history behind its construction. The M640 series uses aerospace aluminum with Mil-Spec hard anodizing and meets IPX7 (submersible to 1 meter for 30 minutes). The build quality is excellent, though the thinner bezel glass is not rated for ballistic impacts like the REIN.

Streamlight earns respect with its IP67 rating on the ProTac 2.0 (dust-tight and submersible to 1 meter). The older HL-X has a slightly lower IPX4 rating. Both use anodized aluminum construction that holds up well to recoil and field abuse. Neither matches the REIN's lens thickness, but at their price points, the durability is well above expectations.

SureFire has the most mature accessory ecosystem. The Scout mount interface is the industry standard. Arisaka, Haley Strategic, Unity Tactical, and dozens of other companies make mounts for SureFire Scout bodies. Whether you need an inline M-LOK mount, an offset mount, or a pic rail adapter, someone makes it for the M640. The SR07 and UE-SR07 switches are equally well-supported by third-party cable management solutions.

Cloud Defensive takes the opposite approach. The REIN 3.0 ships as a complete kit with mount, switch, and cable management in the box. Cloud makes their own Torrent and LCS mounts, and the REIN's mount system has gained enough adoption that Arisaka and others now offer compatible solutions. The integrated Corinth switch is excellent but is proprietary to Cloud.

Streamlight splits the difference. Both ProTac models include a pressure switch and both Picatinny and M-LOK mounting hardware in the box. The HL-X uses a standard 1-inch ring mount, while the 2.0 uses a scout-pattern mount compatible with some third-party options. Arisaka makes inline and offset mounts for Streamlight bodies.

Streamlight delivers the best candela-per-dollar ratio in this comparison. The ProTac HL-X at $120 gives you 50,000 candela and 1,000 lumens, which works out to 417 candela per dollar. The ProTac 2.0 at $200 drops to 87 candela per dollar because of its flood-oriented beam, but adds USB-C charging and IP67 sealing that the HL-X lacks.

At the premium tier, the REIN 3.0 at $350 delivers 286 candela per dollar while adding the longest runtime and toughest construction. The SureFire M640DFT Turbo at $350 matches the candela-per-dollar of the REIN but with significantly less total light output (700 vs 1,250 lumens).

Cost per 10,000 candela favors throw-oriented lights. The Streamlight 2.0 RM and SureFire M640DF rank low here because they prioritize flood (lumens) over throw (candela). That is not a flaw; it is a design choice. For home defense under 50 yards, flood matters more.
