All-Around Duty

Jack of all trades, master of versatility

BCM RECCE-16 MCMR5 componentsCurrent build cost: $2,214.40Prices as of Jul 2, 2026

The All-Around Duty build is a versatile general-purpose AR-15 on a BCM RECCE-16 MCMR, for the intermediate shooter who wants one rifle that handles range, competition, and home defense without over-specializing. It layers a Primary Arms SLx 1-6x LPVO, a LaRue MBT-2S two-stage trigger, and a Streamlight ProTac HL-X light onto BCM's combat-proven mid-length host.

This is the do-everything carbine. The 16-inch cold hammer forged BCM barrel balances velocity and handling, the LPVO covers near-to-mid range work, the two-stage trigger serves precision and defensive shooting alike, and the weapon light makes the rifle usable in the dark. Nothing here is a specialist part; everything is chosen to be good across the board.

Why this build

The BCM RECCE-16 MCMR is the reason this build is trustworthy across roles. It runs a 16-inch cold hammer forged barrel, a mid-length gas system tuned for smooth cycling and reduced recoil, an M16 full-auto bolt carrier, and a free-float MCMR M-LOK rail, all with BCM's professional-grade quality control. It is a conservative, duty-style layout that just works, which is exactly what a jack-of-all-trades rifle should start from.

The Primary Arms SLx 1-6x Gen IV is the versatility piece at a sensible price. Its ACSS Nova reticle gives a bright, uncluttered center aiming point with fiber-wire illumination, the true 1x low end keeps close targets fast, and 6x reaches out for mid-range precision. Named Scope of the Year in the 2024 Industry Choice Awards, it delivers real capability without consuming the budget, which fits a build meant to do many things well rather than one thing perfectly.

The LaRue MBT-2S trigger and Streamlight HL-X light round out the all-rounder. The MBT-2S breaks cleanly at 4.5 pounds across two stages of S7 tool steel, serving both precise and defensive shooting far better than a mil-spec trigger. The HL-X delivers 1,000 lumens and 50,000 candela with the mount and switch included, so the rifle is ready for low-light identification. Together they make a carbine that is genuinely competent at range, in competition, and for defense.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is one rifle really enough for range, competition, and home defense?
For most shooters, yes. A BCM RECCE-16 with a 1-6x LPVO, a clean two-stage trigger, and a weapon light covers close-quarters defense, mid-range precision, and range and competition work in a single rifle. Dedicated builds beat it in any one role, but the all-around setup avoids owning three carbines, which is why the general-purpose layout is the most practical first serious AR for many people.
Can I build this all-around carbine cheaper?
Yes. The build already uses the value-priced Primary Arms SLx 1-6x, but you can drop to the Vortex Strike Eagle 1-6x Gen II for the optic and swap the LaRue MBT-2S for an ALG ACT single-stage trigger to trim more. The BCM RECCE-16 host is the one deliberate spend; its cold hammer forged barrel and quality control are what make the rifle reliable across every role.
Why an LPVO instead of a red dot on an all-around rifle?
An LPVO like the Primary Arms SLx 1-6x gives you both worlds: true 1x for fast close-range shooting like a red dot, plus 6x magnification for mid-range precision a red dot cannot provide. On a do-everything carbine that might see a 10-yard defensive shot or a 300-yard range target, that magnification range is the point. A red dot is faster up close but leaves you without any magnified capability.
Do I need to upgrade the BCM trigger?
The BCM RECCE-16 ships with a serviceable PNT trigger, but the LaRue MBT-2S is a meaningful upgrade for an all-around rifle: its clean 4.5-pound two-stage break improves both precise range shooting and defensive accuracy. If budget is tight, the stock trigger is safe and reliable and the upgrade can wait; the optic and light are higher priorities for a versatile carbine.
