Precision Armament M4-72 Severe-Duty Compensator (.223/5.56, 1/2x28)

The Precision Armament M4-72 is a reverse-venting compensator: its three baffles turn propellant gas back toward the shooter, which is how the manufacturer reaches its rated 73-75% recoil reduction with standard .223 Remington. Venting is biased upward to hold the muzzle down, and the closed bottom keeps it from kicking up dust when firing prone.

The 5.56 model threads 1/2x28 for M4, M16, and AR-15 barrels. It is 2.250 inches long, 0.865 inch in diameter, and 2.6 ounces, machined from heat-treated stainless steel and offered with a matte black Ionbond CrCN coating or in bare stainless. Precision Armament notes it accepts many devices built to fit over a standard A2 flash hider.

The cost of that recoil reduction is blast. Precision Armament warns that the reverse-venting design can cause excessive blast and concussion on barrels shorter than 14.5 inches and on bullpups, and anyone beside the shooter will feel it. Choose it for a competition or range carbine where a flat, fast-tracking muzzle matters most; for a short barrel or a suppressor host, a flash hider or a SureFire SOCOM-mount device is the better fit.
