The AGM PVS-14 NL1 is the Level 1 Gen 2+ tube in the same PVS-14 housing as the NL2. The roughly $248 step up from NL2 to NL1 buys tighter tube spec selection — Level 1 tubes have lower spot count, lower black-spot ratio, and tighter SNR/resolution minimums than Level 2 selections. It is still Gen 2+, still non-gated, and still green phosphor.
At $2,968.47 the NL1 has priced itself out of its own argument. The AGM 3AL3 Gen 3 Level 3 green phosphor sits at $2,895, which is $73.47 less for an auto-gated Gen 3 tube that meaningfully outperforms any Gen 2+ unit on resolution, SNR, and service life. Buy the 3AL3 instead. The NL1 only makes sense as a substitute when the 3AL3 cannot be sourced, and at that point the NL2 saves another $248 for the same housing and the same lack of autogating.
