The AGM PVS-14 3AL3 is the sweet-spot PVS-14 for first-time buyers. At $2,895 it is the cheapest Gen 3 unit on the market that is worth running and the only Gen 3 spec inside $100 of the top-tier Gen 2+ pricing. The tube is Level 3 selection (the lowest of the three Gen 3 grades AGM sells) but is still Gen 3, still autogated, and still meaningfully better than every Gen 2+ tube above and below it on resolution, signal-to-noise, and service life.
For most civilian use cases — occasional training, hunting, property security, recreational stargazing — the 3AL3 is the right buy. Spec-conscious buyers will pay up to the 3AL1 ($3,995) for Level 1 tubes with tighter QA pass criteria, or the 3AW3 ($3,219) for white phosphor.
