The Burris RT-3 is a fixed 3x prism sight built around an etched Ballistic 3X reticle. Because the reticle is etched into the glass rather than projected by an LED, it stays sharp with the illumination off and does not smear into the starburst that shooters with astigmatism see through a red dot. That is the RT-3's core job, and it is the same argument the Vortex Spitfire HD Gen II 3x and Primary Arms SLx 3x MicroPrism make.
The Ballistic 3X reticle uses a broken circle with a center dot for close work, plus stadia lines for elevation and windage holds. Seven illumination settings break down as four daytime levels and three night vision compatible levels, running off a CR2032 with an auto-off timer to protect the battery. The 33.8mm objective is large for the class and drives a 38.2 foot field of view at 100 yards, which is wide for a 3x optic.
The spec that defines how the RT-3 handles is eye relief. At 2.6 inches it is short and demands a consistent, fairly far-forward cheek weld, which is the inherent tradeoff of a prism design versus a red dot's unlimited eye relief. The sight ships with an integral Picatinny mount, so there is no separate mount to buy or torque, though that also means the mounting height is fixed and cannot be swapped to tune the cheek weld. At 8.8 oz the RT-3 sits just under the 9.3 oz Vortex Spitfire HD Gen II 3x, and both weigh a fraction of any LPVO.
