Overview

The Rock Island Armory TAC Ultra FS HC is the important outlier on any budget double-stack 1911 list. It is a high-capacity 1911, but it is not a 2011: it feeds Para-Ordnance-pattern magazines (ACT-MAG / Mec-Gar P18) that do not interchange with the Tisas, Girsan, or Staccato 2011 ecosystem. That single fact decides whether it belongs in your safe. Buy it if you want a high-cap 1911 feel and do not care about plugging into the 2011 magazine ecosystem.

The build is the RIA strength: a full steel frame and slide with G10 grips, the heaviest option in this class, paired with a 5-inch barrel and a single-action trigger. Capacity runs 16+1 to 17+1 depending on SKU, with the optic-ready 51400 shipping 17 rounds. A Picatinny rail accepts a weapon light. Optics-ready models use the Agency Optic System, an interchangeable-plate dovetail that mounts RMR and Holosun 507C footprints; a fixed-sight base model is also offered. The optic-ready 51400 streets around $622, while AOS plate-cut variants run closer to $818 against a roughly $899 MSRP.

The magazine question is the whole decision. The Para-pattern family is smaller and pricier than the 2011 ecosystem, so spares cost more and selection is thinner. The all-steel construction makes this the heaviest gun in its price class, a fixed cost in exchange for the steel-frame shooting feel. As with any Armscor pistol, fit and finish varies unit to unit. If you want the lowest-cost high-cap 1911 and the magazine ecosystem does not matter to you, this is the gun; if you want into the 2011 mag pool, look at the Girsan and Tisas entries instead.
