Best AR-15 Stripped Upper Receivers: Forged, Billet & Slick-Side

An AR-15 stripped upper receiver is the bare receiver body: the flat-top MIL-STD-1913 rail, the barrel-nut interface at the front, the charging-handle channel, and the takedown-pin lugs. It ships without a barrel, gas system, handguard, bolt carrier group, or charging handle. What varies between receivers is the material process, the wall thickness, the weight, and which right-side features are machined in or shipped installed.

That last point drives more build-list surprises than anything else. Aero Precision, Forward Controls Design, and KAK all sell their receivers without the forward assist and ejection-port cover, so those small parts are a separate line item. VLTOR ships the MUR-1A with a pinned forward-assist and shell-deflector assembly already fitted. Cross Machine Tool takes the opposite approach and machines the forward-assist housing away entirely.

Neither process wins outright. Forging is the cheaper, lighter path: the Aero Precision receivers weigh 6.9 ounces and start at $99.99, and the forged receivers here that publish a weight span 6.9 to 9.3 ounces. Billet is what lets a maker cut a profile that a forging die cannot produce, which is why the two billet receivers in this guide are also the two with distinctive interfaces.

On the forged side, VLTOR uses the process to add material rather than remove it. The MUR-1A carries thicker receiver walls than a conventional flat-top upper, which is where its 9.3-ounce weight comes from, and it is the only receiver here that arrives with the forward assist and shell deflector already pinned in place. Forward Controls Design goes the other direction with the URF-F at $129.99, a TDP-spec forging with relief cuts that improve access to a folded rear backup sight stalk and two anti-rotation pin locations for documented handguard families. FCD deliberately leaves the rail T-numbers off.

On the billet side, the Noveske 4th Generation N4 at $300 is machined from 7075-T6 with extended feed ramps, a MIL-STD-1913 top rail, and an anti-rotation interface built for Noveske's matching Gen 4 handguards. That interface is the reason to buy it, and it is worth the most on a build that uses the matching handguard. The CMT UPUR-2 at $199.99 uses billet machining for a different purpose: reconfiguring the right side of the receiver.

A slick-side upper deletes the forward-assist housing, and the CMT UPUR-2 is the version worth buying because it stops there. It keeps the shell deflector and the machined dust-cover port, so the build still throws brass away from the shooter's face and still accepts an ejection-port cover. That is the practical slick-side configuration.

Cross Machine Tool treats those three right-side features as independent options across its billet line, which is why "slick side" is not one thing. The UPUR-3 drops the forward assist, the shell deflector, and the dust-cover port together. The UPUR-4 drops the forward assist and the deflector but keeps the port. A stripped receiver needs six more parts before it fires: a barrel, a gas block and gas tube, a barrel nut and handguard, a bolt carrier group, a charging handle, and a muzzle device.
