Best AR-15 Complete Uppers & 11.5 Uppers: Geissele vs DD vs BCM

The best 11.5 upper is the Geissele Super Duty 11.5 ($1,192.50). Its cold hammer forged, chrome-lined 1:7 barrel is tuned with a .067 inch gas port, and the upper ships with the REBCG (Stressproof bolt, Nanoweapon coating), the Airborne Charging Handle, and a 10.5 inch MK16 M-LOK rail, so a lower and an optic finish the gun.

Daniel Defense makes the two strongest alternatives. The DD4 RIIIS 11.5 ($1,641) puts a cold hammer forged, chrome-lined Government-profile barrel under the RIS III 10.5 inch M-LOK rail, with an M16-profile BCG and GRIP-N-RIP charging handle in the box. The DDM4 V7 S ($1,379) uses the same barrel specification on carbine gas under the MFR 10.0 rail, and the V7 S upper weighs 3.5 lb against 3.7 lb for the RIIIS upper.

BCM is the value tier with real chrome lining. The BCM Standard 11.5 ELW ($775.35) is the lightweight pick: BCM's Enhanced Lightweight taper keeps the weight at the chamber and trims the muzzle end, under the MCMR-10 rail. The BCM BFH 11.5 ($858.95) swaps in a cold hammer forged Government-profile barrel when barrel life matters more than weight.

Knight's Armament's SR-15 KS-3 11.5 upper receiver kit ($1,710) is the premium choice: a cold hammer forged, chrome-lined barrel, a bolt carrier group with KAC's E3.2 bolt, a charging handle, micro iron sights, and an H2 buffer in one kit. At the budget end, the PSA 10.5 nitride upper ($229.99) runs carbine gas under a 9 inch M-LOK free-float rail and ships without a bolt carrier group or charging handle; the BCG selection guide covers what to add.

The piston pick is the HK MR556 A4 11 inch upper receiver kit ($1,997.86). It puts an HK416-pattern short-stroke piston and pusher rod on the lower you already own, which keeps combustion gas out of the receiver, and its adjustable gas regulator sets the action for a suppressor. The kit includes the bolt group, charging handle, and HK's tungsten-filled buffer and action spring. HK states that buffer and spring do not work in a fixed-stock rifle, and a non-HK lower needs a mil-spec hammer for reliable function.

Going longer, the Geissele Super Duty 12.5 ($1,198.99) adds an inch of barrel for more velocity and gas dwell. The AR-15 barrel length guide puts an 11.5 inch barrel at about 2,800 fps with M193, roughly 250 fps behind a 14.5, and rates 11.5 to 12.5 inches the best SBR length for indoor and vehicle use.

An 11.5 upper on a lower with a stock makes a short-barreled rifle; on a lower that started life as a pistol, with no stock, it makes an AR pistol. Since October 9, 2026, ATF does not enforce Form 1 or Form 4 approval or NFA registration for SBRs. That is enforcement discretion, not repeal, and the ATF NFA nonenforcement breakdown covers what it does and does not change. An approved ATF Form 5320.20 is still required before you take an SBR across state lines, and state law still decides whether you can build one at all. Several states only allow an SBR that is registered under federal law, so in those states file a voluntary Form 1, which carries a $0 federal tax, and let it clear before the stock goes on.
