The Glock 42 is the slimmest Glock ever produced at 0.94 inches wide. For buyers already invested in the Glock ecosystem through holsters, sights, and training, the G42 is the logical .380 choice. The Safe Action trigger system is identical to every other Glock, meaning zero retraining. The 3.25-inch barrel is the longest in the pocket .380 class, providing a longer sight radius and marginally better velocity than sub-3-inch competitors.

The locked-breech tilting barrel design is unusual for .380 ACP, which traditionally uses blowback actions. The locked-breech design produces a smoother, less snappy recoil impulse than blowback .380s. Standard Glock sight dovetails accept aftermarket night sights from Trijicon, AmeriGlo, and others.
