Overview

The Savage Axis II XP Compact is the youth version of the deer rifle most new hunters should buy, and the right-sized package for a first deer season. It is a distinct compact SKU, not a discounted full-size: the length of pull shortens to 12.75 inches and the barrel to 20 inches, so a youth or small-framed shooter mounts it correctly and carries it comfortably on a long sit.

It ships the way a first deer rifle should, with a 3-9x40mm scope already mounted and bore-sighted, so the only range work before opening day is confirming zero at 100 yards. Savage's user-adjustable AccuTrigger comes standard, breaking lighter and cleaner than anything else in the price class, which matters enormously for a young shooter learning to press a trigger without flinching. A detachable box magazine feeds it.

It comes in the two cartridges that define youth deer hunting: .243 Winchester, the classic low-recoil deer round, and 7mm-08 Remington, which hits harder with still-manageable recoil for a kid who can handle a bit more. Either drops deer cleanly inside normal woods ranges. The synthetic stock is plain and the muzzle is unthreaded, but for two boxes of ammo a year and a deer in November, the Compact does exactly its job.
