Rare Breed Triggers
The original forced reset trigger with an ambidextrous 3-position safety and full hardware kit
The Rare Breed FRT-15L3 is the current production version of the forced reset trigger that started the category. Rare Breed Triggers built the original FRT-15, the trigger at the center of the federal fight that ended in the May 2025 DOJ settlement, the outcome that keeps eligible FRTs from being treated federally as machine guns. Like every forced reset design, it uses the bolt carrier's rearward movement to mechanically push the trigger back into reset after each shot, locking it until the bolt returns to battery. Buyers should treat legal status as something to verify before ordering, since state rules and case outcomes can shift.
The FRT-15L3 ships with an ambidextrous 3-position safety (Safe, Semi, FRT) with selector levers exposed on both sides of the lower, so left-handed shooters and anyone who switches shoulders around barricades get a positive selector under the thumb. The included ambi selector is not a price advantage, though: the Triggered Company Disruptor Ambi ships with an ambidextrous selector pre-installed at $324.99, roughly $125 less, so the FRT-15L3's case rests on being the original design rather than on the selector. Pull weight is 4 to 4.5 lbs in semi-automatic mode and 5.5 to 6 lbs in forced reset mode. That heavier FRT-mode pull is a real trade-off against lighter cassettes like the Triggered Company Disruptor, which runs 3.75 to 4.1 lbs.
Construction is 7075 anodized aluminum and heat-treated 4140 steel. The box includes the trigger, two anti-walk pins, four anti-walk pin screws, a selector drum, two selector levers (one long, one short), two T10 torx selector lever screws, and two T10 torx wrenches, so installation needs nothing beyond the included hardware. The FRT-15L3 requires a full-auto-compatible bolt carrier group and an H2 or H3 buffer, or alternatively an A5 buffer system. It fits mil-spec AR-15 lowers; it may not fit certain Colt models or other lowers that carry a sear block or shelf. One more buyer-verification note: Rare Breed, through its licensing entity ABC IP, LLC, is pursuing patent infringement suits against two competing forced reset makers, Hoffman Tactical (filed December 23, 2025; a preliminary injunction halted Super Safety sales) and Peak Tactical / Partisan Triggers, maker of the Disruptor (filed early 2026; a TRO was denied and the case is pending). The outcomes could affect availability and support across the category.
