Overview

The PSA 16" nitride mid-length complete upper is the value anchor of a budget AR-15 build. Its 16" barrel is 4150V chrome-moly-vanadium steel finished in nitride (Melonite), a salt-bath treatment that hardens the bore and resists corrosion without the cost of chrome lining. For civilian round counts, nitride delivers accuracy and service life comparable to chrome lining; the tradeoff only shows up under sustained full-auto heat, which is not a concern for a range or duty-lite build.

The mid-length gas system on the 16" barrel is the reason to pick this over a carbine-gas upper. Moving the gas port further down the barrel lowers port pressure and lengthens dwell time, so the action cycles noticeably softer and runs easier on brass and buffers. The 1:7 twist stabilizes every modern 5.56 load from 55-grain blasting ammo to 77-grain match. A .750" low-profile gas block sits under a lightweight M-LOK free-float rail, and the muzzle is threaded 1/2x28 behind an A2 flash hider.

Where this upper earns its spot in a budget build is the parts it includes. The complete configuration ships with a full-auto-profile bolt carrier group built on a Carpenter 158 bolt, plus a charging handle, so nothing else is needed to drop it onto a stripped lower. The same upper without the BCG and charging handle runs $250, so letting PSA supply both costs $100 rather than the $160 those parts run separately. Step up to PSA's Premium/CHF line for an FN cold-hammer-forged barrel, but for a first build or a spare, the nitride upper is the value pick.

Key Features

  • 16" 4150V chrome-moly-vanadium barrel with nitride (Melonite) finish
  • Mid-length gas system for softer cycling than carbine gas
  • 1:7 twist stabilizes 55 to 77 grain 5.56
  • Full-auto-profile BCG with Carpenter 158 bolt included
  • Charging handle included
  • Lightweight M-LOK free-float rail with .750" low-profile gas block
  • Forged 7075 T6 upper receiver, 1/2x28 muzzle threads with A2 flash hider

Pros

  • +Cheapest vetted route to a running 5.56 upper
  • +Mid-length gas runs softer and easier on the action
  • +BCG and charging handle included, ready to drop on a lower
  • +Nitride barrel gives good accuracy and corrosion resistance for the price
