Overview

The Browning BAR is the rifle hunters reach for when they expect to need a fast follow-up shot. The current MK 4 uses the same core gas-operated BAR idea Browning has refined for decades, now with an aluminum-alloy receiver, seven-lug rotary bolt, threaded barrel-to-receiver interface, Inflex recoil pad, and a hinged-floorplate detachable-box magazine.

In .30-06 with a 22-inch barrel, the BAR MK 4 Hunter Composite weighs 7 pounds 2 ounces bare and delivers the same ballistic envelope as a Winchester Model 70 or Remington 700 without the bolt-cycle pause. The hinged-floorplate magazine holds 4 rounds in standard chamberings, the receiver is drilled and tapped for scope bases, and the Hunter Composite uses a matte black composite stock. For drives, deer crossings, and any hunting style where a second shot inside three seconds is on the table, the BAR is the right pick.

Key Features

  • Gas-operated rotary-bolt action with seven-lug bolt head
  • 22-inch barrel on standard chamberings (24-inch on magnums)
  • Aluminum-alloy receiver keeps weight just over 7 lb
  • Detachable hinged-floorplate magazine, 4-round standard capacity or 3-round magnum capacity
  • Drilled and tapped receiver for standard scope bases
  • Inflex 2 recoil pad, raised SoftFlex cheekpad, overmolded grip panels, composite trigger guard, and gold-plated trigger

Pros

  • +Best semi-auto hunting rifle on action quality and field reliability
  • +Gas system absorbs felt recoil noticeably in .30-06 and .300 Win Mag
  • +Caliber selection covers every common deer and elk cartridge
  • +Hunter, Hunter Composite, Medallion, Speed, and DBM variants cover most hunting preferences

Cons

  • Heavier than a Tikka Lite for steep country
  • Hunter Composite has no factory threaded muzzle
  • Detachable magazine is hinged floorplate, not a true drop-free box
  • Gas system needs more cleaning attention than a bolt action
