What 500 Rounds Showed

Nothing broke, nothing moved, and the zero did not walk. Over 500 rounds of mixed 115gr FMJ on the ZEV OZ9 V2 Elite Hypercomp at practice distances inside 25 yards, the 507COMP produced no malfunctions, no dot dropout, and no shift in point of impact. The two mounting screws were still where they started at the end of it.

The Hypercomp is a hard host for an open emitter. Its compact slide vents through four tapered top ports, so the optic sits directly behind a column of gas and unburned powder on every shot. The glass needed wiping more often than it would on a non-ported gun, but the emitter channel never fouled enough to dim the dot mid-string.

The Window Is the Product

At 1.1 x 0.87 inches the 507COMP shows roughly two thirds more glass than a 507C X2. A standard pistol window punishes a slightly imperfect presentation by hiding the dot behind the housing until you correct your grip. A window this size keeps the dot inside the frame through that error, so the correction happens while you are already looking at the target instead of hunting for the reticle.

Under recoil the dot lifts and returns inside the window rather than leaving it, so you watch the whole cycle instead of reacquiring at the top of each shot. The Hypercomp's porting already cuts muzzle rise, which shortens the distance the dot has to travel. Transitions benefit for the same reason: the peripheral view through the sides of the window never fully closes off.

That glass is not free. A larger viewport is more unsupported lens carried in a taller housing, and the class has a record. Sage Dynamics has tracked self-reported line-of-duty optic failures since 2018 across its instructor network, a possible sample of 11,000 or more duty handguns by the 2023 seventh edition of its white paper. In that data the Trijicon SRO, the other big-window competition dot, accounts for four lenses broken by drops and eight broken by crush force in a holster during an arrest. The Trijicon RMR, which the same paper calls the most commonly issued duty optic, logs two cracked windows across a far larger install base.

The 507COMP is not in that table, which tracks duty carry rather than match guns, so there is no equivalent record for it either way. Its own published drop history is thin and split: one reviewer cracked a lens on a fall from a short table, another dropped his on a concrete floor during a reload and found no damage. Holosun's warranty covers manufacturing defects, not physical damage, so a cracked lens is on you. Buy the window for what it does on the timer, and do not assume it brings duty-optic impact tolerance along with it.

Watching It Track: 17 Rounds in 6.69 Seconds

A 17-round string off the Hypercomp ran 6.69 seconds start to finish, with a 2.34 second first shot, a 0.19 second best split, and a 272 millisecond average split. That is a firing cadence of roughly 221 rounds per minute once the gun is up. At 272 milliseconds between shots there is no time to go looking for the dot. It either comes back inside the glass or the string falls apart.

The split times burned into that clip came from our shot timer video annotator, which reads each shot off the audio track of a range video, calculates the first-shot time and every split, and exports the clip with the timer overlay on it. It runs in the browser, so you can put the same readout on your own footage and see whether your splits hold up the way the cadence feels like they do.

The gun, the ammunition, and the shooter all move that number, so a split time is not a measurement of the optic. What it is good for is the comparison against yourself: run the same drill with a standard-window dot on the same pistol, and the gap between average splits is what the window bought you.

Mounting It to the ZEV Hypercomp

The 507COMP is a native RMR-footprint optic and the OZ9 V2 Elite Hypercomp slide is cut for the RMR pattern from the factory, so this was a two-screw job with nothing bought and nothing milled. RMR is the most widely cut footprint in pistol optics, so the odds that your slide or your existing plate already accepts it are high.

There is no plate under it. The two screws thread into the slide itself, and the recoil lugs in the cut locate the optic and take the shear so the screws are not carrying recoil. That is one bolted joint instead of two: lower, more rigid, and one fewer interface to work loose. It also means the optic sits at whatever height the cut dictates, so plan co-witness around the gun rather than around a plate you can swap. Zeroing was uneventful. Adjustments move 1 MOA per click with plus or minus 30 MOA of travel in each axis, which is less room than the 507C X2's plus or minus 50 MOA but far more than a correctly-cut slide ever needs. 507COMP vs 507C: What Actually Changes

The window grows from 0.91 x 0.63 inches to 1.1 x 0.87 inches, and the solar panel disappears. Holosun lists Solar Power as No on every 507COMP variant, so where a 507C X2 or a 509T can draw from ambient light, the COMP runs on its CR1632 and nothing else.

The cell is rated 50,000 hours at brightness setting 6, Shake Awake keeps it asleep in the safe, and the side-loading tray means a swap never costs you the zero. It is still a real difference between two optics people cross-shop constantly, and it is invisible until you turn them over.

Reticles go from a 2 MOA dot and one 32 MOA circle to a 2 MOA dot with 8, 20, and 32 MOA circle options. Housing, sealing, and vibration ratings are identical at 7075-T6, IP67, and 5000G, using Holosun's own labels. Adjustment travel is the one place the 507C wins, at plus or minus 50 MOA against 30.

On price the 507COMP runs $369.99 against $232.99 for the 507C X2. On a competition gun the window is worth the difference. On a carry gun neither one is the right buy, for reasons that have nothing to do with the window.

The Reticle Set Earns Its Keep

Holosun calls the reticle set the Performance Reticle System on the red and green models: a 2 MOA dot on its own, or 8, 20, and 32 MOA circles around it. The 32 MOA circle inside a window this wide is a speed tool on close targets, because the circle finds the target before your eye finds the dot, and the dot is already centered when it arrives.

The 8 and 20 MOA circles are what the standard 507C does not offer. A 20 MOA circle is tight enough to use as an aiming reference at practice distance rather than just a locator, which makes it a reasonable default on a competition gun. Lock mode keeps the setting where you put it, so a stage does not end with an accidental reticle change.

Brightness runs 12 settings, 8 daylight and 4 for night vision. The top of the daylight range is brighter than the gun needs outdoors, so a bright day leaves headroom rather than pinning you at the top of the scale.

Why This Is Not a Duty Optic

Buy an enclosed-emitter sight for a duty or carry gun and leave the 507COMP on the competition pistol. The open emitter fires the diode across an open channel to the glass, and everything that lands in that channel costs you the dot: rain running off the slide, lint packed in from a holster, sweat, unburned powder. Holosun built this one for competition and named it accordingly. On a range gun you wipe down between stages the open housing is a fair trade for the window. On a pistol carried all day and drawn once under pressure, it is not.

The Holosun 509T is the in-house answer, with a Grade 5 titanium housing, a sealed emitter, and the solar failsafe the COMP lacks. A Note on the Host Gun

The OZ9 V2 Elite Hypercomp flatters this optic. Four tapered ports vent through the top of its compact slide and cut muzzle rise before the optic ever has to help, so the 507COMP's tracking advantage shows up against an already-low baseline. A stock-barrel duty pistol will move more, which makes the window matter more, not less.

Porting also puts gas and powder residue directly in front of an open-emitter optic, and the glass showed it. Pairing an open emitter with a ported gun means cleaning the lens as part of the normal routine rather than as an occasional chore.
