Heavy barrel thermal mass on a budget
The Budget Hopsaw is a civilian infantry automatic rifle for the intermediate builder who wants sustained-fire capability without the Block 2 price tag. It reaches the same rate-of-fire goal through a different door: instead of a dedicated forced reset trigger, it runs an Atrius forced reset selector over an ALG Defense ACT mil-spec trigger, and it centers on a Geissele cold hammer forged barrel for heat endurance during long strings.
This is a parts build that requires assembly or a gunsmith, laid out on Aero Precision M4E1 receivers with a Midwest Industries Combat Rail. The chrome-lined CHF barrel takes the heat of high-volume fire, the D-60 drum keeps 60 rounds ready, and the whole package comes in at well under half the cost of the Block 2 approach.

Parts build: the receivers and barrel are line items in the list below, so there is no complete rifle to buy first.
The forced reset selector is what makes this build affordable. The Atrius FRS is a forced reset selector, not a trigger; it replaces the standard safety and uses a mechanically leveraged cam to force the trigger forward after each shot. It works with a mil-spec fire control group, so you keep an inexpensive ALG ACT trigger underneath instead of buying a complete forced reset trigger. That splits the sustained-fire function across two cheaper parts and preserves a standard semi-auto option on the selector.
The ALG ACT is the right trigger to pair with it. ALG Defense is Geissele's sister company, and the ACT is a mil-spec trigger with refined surfaces: nickel boron on the trigger, nickel teflon on the hammer, and unchanged sear geometry so reliability matches a standard fire control group. Because the Atrius FRS needs a mil-spec or Geissele super-safety-cut trigger to cam against, the ACT is a clean, proven match rather than a compromise.
The Geissele CHF barrel is the heat sink. Cold hammer forged from Chrome Moly Vanadium with a chrome-lined bore and mid-length gas, it is built to endure the high round counts a sustained-fire rifle sees, and the chrome lining resists the wear that fast strings accelerate. Paired with the Midwest Combat Rail's M-LOK real estate and a BCM full-auto bolt carrier, it delivers the thermal endurance of the Hopsaw concept without the premium-barrel cost.
Upper Receivers

$128.24 at Optics Planet · Out of stock
The Aero Precision M4E1 stripped upper is a forged 7075-T6 receiver with M4 feed ramps and a strengthened barrel extension interface for a tighter barrel fit. It is the standard, affordable foundation for a parts build and pairs cleanly with the Geissele barrel and Midwest rail.
Lower Receivers

$155.00 MSRP
The Aero M4E1 stripped lower keeps assembly simple with its threaded bolt catch pin and removes upper-lower wobble with a tension screw. The integrated trigger guard is stronger than a pinned guard, which matters on a rifle that will run hot and hard.
Barrels

$328.50 at Optics Planet · In stock
The Geissele CHF is a 14.5-inch cold hammer forged 5.56 barrel with a chrome-lined bore, 1:7 twist, mid-length gas, and 1/2x28 threads. The chrome lining and CHF construction are what earn it a spot in a sustained-fire build; they endure the heat and round count that would wear a lesser barrel. At 14.5 inches it needs a pinned muzzle device to reach a non-NFA 16-inch length, or you register it as a short-barreled rifle.
A 16-inch nitride mid-length barrel skips the pin-and-weld step and costs far less, trading chrome-lining endurance for a lower entry price.
The Criterion CORE stainless mid-length trades chrome lining for tighter groups if you value accuracy over maximum sustained-fire round count.
Handguards

$188.95 at Optics Planet · In stock
The Midwest Industries Combat Rail is a 6061-T6 M-LOK handguard with seven attachment faces, a full-length top rail, and a lifetime warranty, at a price well below premium rails. The 15-inch model runs 11.4 ounces and gives plenty of mounting room for a light and sling while free-floating the CHF barrel.
Bolt Carrier Groups

$223.99 at Optics Planet · In stock
The BCM bolt carrier group is a full-auto M16 profile with a shot-peened C158 bolt, chrome-lined interior, staked gas key, and an enhanced extractor, all HP/MPI tested. Its mass and QC keep the gun cycling reliably through the fast strings the forced reset selector enables.
The Daniel Defense M16 BCG adds a heavier phosphate and chrome-lined finish package if you want the same carrier used in DD complete rifles.
Charging Handles & Action Controls

$79.79 at Optics Planet · Out of stock
The BCM Gunfighter charging handle uses a Mod 4 medium extended latch and an internal design that routes force into the handle body instead of the roll pin, so it survives support-hand-only manipulation. It is the value benchmark for a durable single-side charging handle.
The Radian Raptor-LT adds full ambidextrous latches at 1.2 ounces for easier manipulation under an optic.
Triggers & Fire Control

$82.95 MSRP
The ALG Defense ACT is an enhanced mil-spec single-stage trigger, roughly 6 pounds with the standard spring, from Geissele's sister company. Its nickel boron and nickel teflon coatings smooth the pull while the sear geometry stays mil-spec, which is exactly what the Atrius forced reset selector needs to cam against. It ships with both a full-power and a reduced-power spring. Keep the fire control mil-spec pattern; the selector cams only against mil-spec and Geissele super-safety-cut triggers, so cassette-style drop-in triggers are out.
Pistol Grips

$18.90 at Optics Planet · In stock
The Magpul MOE-K2 uses a steeper 17-degree angle that suits an aggressive modern stance and reduces wrist strain during long range strings. It is a value-priced polymer grip that accepts storage cores.
The BCM Gunfighter Mod 3 reduced-angle grip with storage is the pick if the steep K2 angle does not suit your hold.
Safety Selectors

$169.99 at Optics Planet · In stock
The Atrius Development forced reset selector is the budget path to sustained fire. It is a forced reset selector, not a trigger: it drops into the safety-selector slot, adds a third Full-Semi mode, and uses a mechanically leveraged cam to reset a mil-spec trigger after each shot. It requires minor material removal from the trigger tail for the cam to engage, and it is right-hand only. It works with mil-spec and Geissele super-safety-cut triggers, which is why it pairs with the ALG ACT.
The ambidextrous Atrius FRS adds a left-side selector using the same internals for shooters who need to work the safety from both sides.
The Mars three-position super safety is another forced reset selector that cams a mil-spec trigger, if you prefer that design.
Stocks & Braces

$59.95 at Optics Planet · In stock
The Magpul CTR is the value benchmark stock at 8.8 ounces, with a friction lock that eliminates the wobble common to basic M4 stocks. It keeps weight and cost down while giving a solid, repeatable shoulder position.
The B5 Enhanced SOPMOD adds a wider cheek weld and dual battery storage at 11.8 ounces for shooters running a magnified optic.
Magazines & Feeding

$127.95 at Optics Planet · In stock
The Magpul D-60 keeps 60 rounds ready in a compact drum with a ratcheting loading lever, so the forced reset selector's rate of fire is not interrupted by frequent reloads. It weighs 46 ounces loaded, the trade for the capacity.
A standard 30-round PMAG Gen M3 cuts weight and cost for general range use when you do not need the drum.
