Overview

The RIS III is Daniel Defense's M-LOK follow-on to the RIS II, and the 10.55" version is the short one, sized for carbine-gas uppers in the 10.3" to 11.5" range. Daniel Defense keeps the parts of the RIS II that earned the rail its reputation with USSOCOM since 2006: the free-float barrel design, 6061-T6 aluminum construction, the patented six-bolt bolt-up system, Grade 8 fasteners, and an uninterrupted mil-spec 1913 top rail.

What changes is everything below the top rail. Instead of Picatinny on three sides, the RIS III carries seven M-LOK attachment positions along the length of the handguard, plus integral QD swivel attachment points on both sides. That is where the weight goes: 13.7 oz for this length, against 14.1 oz for the shorter 9.55" MK18 RIS II quad rail.

The bolt-up system is backward compatible with the RIS II, using the same barrel nut and bolt-up plate, and the RIS III upper rail is compatible with the RIS II lower rail. For a builder already running RIS II hardware, that means the swap is a rail change rather than a barrel nut job.

Key Features

  • Seven M-LOK attachment positions along the handguard
  • Uninterrupted mil-spec 1913 Picatinny top rail
  • Aircraft-grade 6061-T6 aluminum construction
  • Patented 6-bolt bolt-up system with steel barrel nut
  • Grade 8 military specification fasteners
  • Integral QD swivel attachment points on both sides
  • Free-floating barrel design
  • Backward compatible with the RIS II bolt-up system

Pros

  • +M-LOK sheds the weight and bulk of the RIS II quad rail
  • +Same 6-bolt bolt-up interface as the RIS II, so the barrel nut carries over
  • +Continuous top rail for night vision and clip-on optics
  • +Integral QD sling points on both sides
  • +13.7 oz is competitive with dedicated lightweight rails

Cons

  • $582 is well above most M-LOK rails of this length
  • Bolt-up installation needs the barrel nut wrench, not a drop-in job
  • Requires a low-profile gas block; this is not the fixed front sight post configuration
  • Heavier than skeletonized rails that give up the RIS III's rail interface
