Overview

The Q Boombox is the big brother to the Honey Badger, the large-frame 8.6 Blackout SBR that Q built to do to the 300-meter space what the .300 BLK Honey Badger did to the CQB space. Where the Honey Badger is a compact .300 BLK gun, the Boombox scales the same skeletonized-Q design language up to a .338-bore cartridge on a lightweighted large-frame receiver set. The whole rifle weighs 5 pounds 8 ounces, which is remarkable for a semi-auto 8.6 host; a CMMG Resolute or Bear Creek BC-10 runs heavier on a conventional DPMS-pattern receiver.

The 12-inch barrel carries a 1:3 twist, the aggressive rate 8.6 Blackout was designed around to stabilize long, heavy subsonic .338 bullets at low velocity. The muzzle is threaded M18x1.5 and ships with Q's XL Cherry Bomb, a taper-mount muzzle device that serves as the quick-attach interface for Q's Short Chop and PORQ CHOP cans; thread a .338-rated Q can onto it and the rifle runs Hollywood-quiet on 300-grain subsonic loads. It feeds from standard SR-25 pattern magazines, so magazines and the .308 bolt-face ecosystem come from the mainstream large-frame AR world rather than a proprietary catalog.

This is the premium path into 8.6 Blackout, and the price reflects it: roughly $4,500 for the host, more than double a CMMG Resolute and seven times a Bear Creek BC-10. The 12-inch barrel makes it a Short Barreled Rifle, so the lower is NFA-registered; under the 2026 OBBBA rules the making/transfer tax on an SBR is $0, but the Form and NFA registration still apply. Budget for a .338-rated suppressor and plan to reload, because 8.6 Blackout factory ammunition is the real recurring cost of running the cartridge.

Key Features

  • 12-inch 1:3 twist 416R stainless barrel built for heavy .338 subsonic projectiles
  • Lightweighted large-frame receiver set; 5lb 8oz complete
  • M18x1.5 muzzle with Q's XL Cherry Bomb quick-attach muzzle device installed
  • Feeds from standard SR-25 pattern magazines, ships with a 20-round mag
  • Q-Sert M-LOK handguard with a full-length Picatinny top rail
  • Two-position collapsible stock; 26.75 in collapsed, 31.25 in extended

Pros

  • +Q's dedicated 8.6 Blackout SBR from the maker that created the cartridge
  • +5lb 8oz weight is exceptionally light for a semi-auto large-frame host
  • +XL Cherry Bomb muzzle snaps directly onto Q's Short Chop and PORQ CHOP cans
  • +Standard SR-25 magazines and .308 bolt face stay in the mainstream ecosystem

Cons

  • Roughly $4,500, more than double a CMMG Resolute in the same caliber
  • 12-inch barrel makes it an SBR; NFA registration and Form still apply even with the $0 tax
  • M18x1.5 muzzle and Cherry Bomb mount steer you toward Q's own suppressors
  • 8.6 Blackout factory ammunition is scarce and expensive; plan to reload for volume
