Overview

The LMT MWS MRGG-A Reference Rifle is the civilian version of the carbine LMT Defense is delivering to SOCOM under the MRGG-A (Mid-Range Gas Gun, Assault) contract, awarded in August 2025 with a $92M ceiling over 10 years. It reproduces the deployed configuration: 14.5-inch 6.5 Creedmoor barrel on a monolithic 7075-T6 MRP upper, MARS-H fully ambidextrous lower, forward assist, and notched bolt carrier. Because the civilian version keeps the 14.5-inch barrel, it transfers as a factory SBR on a Form 4, the same process most tactical shooters already run for a suppressor.

SOCOM selected the MRGG-A to replace aging 7.62 DMR platforms (M110, SR-25 variants) with a lighter, shorter 6.5 Creedmoor system that retains DMR-class reach with carbine handling. The 14.5-inch barrel gives up roughly 200 fps versus a 20-inch MRGG-S but keeps the rifle viable in vehicle and CQB-adjacent roles while still delivering 6.5 CM ballistic advantages past 600 yards.

For civilian buyers, this is a reference rifle first. At roughly $5,200 in the 14.5-inch SBR configuration, it is the specific tool for shooters who want the actual SOCOM-selected platform, and the short barrel pairs naturally with a suppressor in a DMR or defensive role. Buyers who do not want an SBR should pick the 20-inch LMT MWS MARS-H or the Geissele VSASS MRGG MK1 instead.

Key Features

  • 14.5-inch 6.5 Creedmoor stainless barrel, 1:8 twist, cryogenically treated
  • Monolithic MRP upper machined from a single 7075-T6 aluminum billet
  • MARS-H ambidextrous lower with forward assist and notched bolt carrier
  • Uninterrupted Picatinny top rail across upper and handguard
  • Quick-change barrel system compatible with other MWS chamberings

Pros

  • +Civilian version of the SOCOM MRGG-A contract rifle (2025)
  • +Monolithic upper provides the stablest optics mounting surface in class
  • +MARS-H ambidextrous controls carried over from the deployed configuration
  • +14.5-inch barrel retains DMR-class ballistics in a shorter package

Cons

  • Factory SBR transfers on a Form 4 (standard NFA process)
  • Roughly $5,200 price point before optic and accessories
  • Loses ~200 fps vs a 20-inch MRGG-S for pure distance work
  • Lower production volume than the MWS MARS-H limits availability
