Overview

The Smith & Wesson M&P 15-22 Sport is an AR-15 that shoots .22 LR. The controls are laid out exactly like a standard AR: the same safety, magazine release, bolt catch, charging handle, and six-position carbine stock. A shooter who trains on the 15-22 builds the exact muscle memory that transfers to a 5.56 carbine, at roughly a tenth of the ammunition cost.

It is a real modern sporting rifle, not a toy. The 16.5-inch barrel sits inside a slim 10-inch M-LOK handguard, the upper carries a full-length Picatinny rail, and it accepts standard AR grips, stocks, lights, optics, and M-LOK accessories. It ships with 25-round magazines and a polymer receiver set that keeps the weight near 5 pounds. The dedicated 15-22 magazines feed reliably and resist the rim-lock issues that plague stick mags on other rimfire platforms.

Against a Ruger 10/22, the 15-22 trades the 10/22's deeper aftermarket for an authentic AR manual of arms. For a shooter whose goal is to train on, or simply enjoy, an AR platform without 5.56 ammo prices, it is the clear pick. For a pure hunting or precision .22, a bolt gun or a 10/22 makes more sense.
