Overview

The Griffin Armament Mil-Spec Gas Pocket BCG redirects gas to the left side of the receiver. A milled pocket in the carrier captures that gas and lets it expand and cool inside the carrier. The longer dwell time lowers cyclic rate and softens the impulse while reducing the gas and sound that reach the shooter's right ear.

Griffin publishes up to 10.5 dB of right-ear reduction from its gas pocket carriers on an 18-inch rifle-gas host, plus an average reduction of 3.5 dB on an 11.5-inch carbine-gas SBR. Both figures come from Griffin's tests with conventional higher-backpressure muzzle-mounted suppressors.

The mil-spec version uses an 8620 black-nitride carrier, a Carpenter 158 manganese-phosphate bolt that is magnetic-particle inspected, an S7 tool steel extractor, and a 4340 steel cam pin. Its 4140 steel gas key is black nitrided and staked to the mil-spec TDP. It needs no upper receiver modification and works with standard mil-spec buffers and springs. Griffin's separate Enhanced Gas Pocket BCG steps up to a 17-4 stainless carrier, 0.060 inch more cam-pin travel, dual ejectors, and a shortened buffer and spring bundle.

Key Features

  • Left-side gas pocket captures, expands, and cools redirected gas inside the carrier
  • Extended dwell time lowers cyclic rate and softens the recoil impulse
  • Works with standard mil-spec buffers and springs without upper receiver modification
  • 8620 steel carrier with a black nitride finish
  • Carpenter 158 manganese-phosphate bolt with magnetic-particle inspection
  • S7 tool steel extractor and 4340 steel cam pin
  • 4140 steel black-nitride gas key staked to the mil-spec TDP

Pros

  • +Reduces gas and sound reaching the shooter's right ear
  • +Longer dwell time lowers cyclic rate and softens the impulse
  • +Installs without modifying the upper receiver
  • +Works with standard mil-spec buffers and springs
  • +Carpenter 158 bolt is magnetic-particle inspected

Cons

  • Does not control the total gas volume entering an over-gassed action like an adjustable gas block
  • Manganese-phosphate bolt takes more effort to clean than a nitride or DLC bolt
  • Costs more than a plain mil-spec carrier
