Overview

The CVA Scout Compact is the single-shot break-action that strips a first deer rifle down to its safest, simplest form. There is no magazine and no bolt to cycle: the action breaks open like a shotgun, the hunter drops in one cartridge, closes it, and the rifle is loaded. Open the action and it is unmistakably empty. For a parent supervising a young hunter's first season, that visible, deliberate one-shot manual of arms is the whole appeal.

It is built around young shooters. The action is fully ambidextrous with a reversible cocking spur, so a left-handed kid is not stuck with right-handed ergonomics, and the CrushZone recoil pad plus the inherently mild .243 Winchester keep felt recoil low enough to avoid building a flinch. The 20-inch barrel is fluted stainless and comes threaded, so a suppressor or brake mounts to further protect young ears. A DuraSight rail is included for mounting a scope.

CVA offers the Scout in .350 Legend and 7mm-08 Remington as well, but .243 is the classic first-deer chambering. The tradeoff for the simplicity is that it is single-shot only, with no follow-up shot without reloading and no real upgrade path. As a deliberate, affordable, properly sized rifle to learn deer hunting on, though, the Scout Compact is hard to beat under $400.
