Overview

The Daniel Defense MK18 SBR is the factory short-barrel rifle that traces directly to the SOCOM CQBR / MK18 Mod 0 program. The 10.3" cold hammer-forged barrel runs a carbine-length gas system, the same setup the military settled on for sustained suppressed 5.56 fire from a compact platform. Daniel Defense ships it as a registered SBR with a collapsing stock, so there is no Form 1 build, no pin-and-weld muzzle device, and no homework on legal barrel length. Federal NFA tax on SBRs was zeroed under OBBBA effective January 2026; the Form 4 transfer and ATF registration still apply, but eForm approvals are running on the order of days to a couple of weeks.

The MK18 SBR ships with the 9.5" RIS III M-LOK rail, the same handguard Daniel Defense designed for current SOCOM contracts. The top rail runs uninterrupted from the upper receiver to the muzzle, which matters for IR laser and night vision stacks. Controls are mil-spec AR fire control with DD's enhanced furniture (DD pistol grip and buttstock). The factory flash suppressor is 1/2x28, so any direct-thread or QD suppressor in the 5.56 ecosystem mounts without a barrel swap.

The tradeoff against a 14.5" or 16" carbine is muzzle velocity. A 10.3" 5.56 loses roughly 200 fps versus a 14.5" barrel, which compresses the effective fragmentation range of M193 and M855 to inside roughly 100 meters. For vehicle ops, patrol carbine, and home defense distances that is not a meaningful limitation; for outdoor work past 200 yards, a longer barrel is the better tool. Run suppressed and the platform benefits from an adjustable gas block to manage overgas, which is the standard upgrade path for any short-barrel 5.56 SBR.

Key Features

  • 10.3" cold hammer-forged chrome-lined barrel, 1:7 twist, government profile
  • Carbine-length gas system, the SOCOM-spec setup for 10.3" 5.56
  • Daniel Defense RIS III 9.5" M-LOK rail, current SOCOM contract handguard
  • Full-length uninterrupted top rail for NV/laser stacks
  • 1/2x28 muzzle thread with factory flash suppressor
  • Mil-spec AR fire control with DD pistol grip and collapsing stock
  • Factory-registered SBR (Form 4 transfer item, not a brace pistol)

Pros

  • +Factory-built SBR, no Form 1 build, no pin-and-weld muzzle device required
  • +10.3" SOCOM-spec barrel is the reference standard 5.56 carbine length
  • +DD RIS III rail and full-length top rail accept any NV/laser/optic stack
  • +Daniel Defense QC and torture-test reputation is the floor here, not the ceiling

Cons

  • NFA item, requires Form 4 transfer and ATF registration paperwork (federal tax zeroed under OBBBA effective 2026-01-01)
  • Premium pricing: MSRP $2,499 plus FFL transfer to your SOT dealer
  • 10.3" barrel sacrifices muzzle velocity vs 14.5" or 16" carbines
  • Suppressed use benefits from an adjustable gas block, overgassed without one
