SIG516 G3 11.5 Pistol and SBR: Piston AR Goes Short

SIG is selling the SIG516 G3 as a factory 11.5-inch pistol and a factory 11.5-inch SBR. That is the news. The 16-inch Mohawk was already the G3 rifle. The short guns take that same short-stroke piston upper and cut it to the length where a piston AR actually earns the extra weight.

SKU P516G3-556N-11B is the pistol. It ships on an AR pistol lower with a Magpul BSL stabilizing brace and one 30-round polymer magazine. SKU R516G3-556N-11B-SBR is the SBR. It ships with a six-position Magpul DT stock on the same 11.5-inch upper. The uppers are the same gun. The rear end is the legal and handling split.

The 16-inch Mohawk stays in the 2026 AR-15 rifle rankings as the general-purpose G3. The 11.5 is the CQB and truck-gun version of that rifle, not a different operating system.

Both 11.5 SKUs run an 11.5-inch cold hammer-forged barrel with a 1:7 twist, threaded 1/2x28, with a SIG flash hider-compensator on the muzzle. The action is a short-stroke gas piston with an adjustable gas valve. Combustion gas drives the piston at the block and vents there, so carbon and heat stay out of the bolt carrier. That is the whole point of a 516 against a direct-impingement 11.5: a short 5.56 port is already overgassed, and a suppressor dumps still more gas back into the gun. Beretta's NARP uses the same idea on a service rifle: a short-stroke piston with a suppressed gas setting. SIG put that idea on a civilian AR lower at 11.5 inches.

SIG steel-reinforced the cam path and the feed ramp, the two surfaces that take piston AR abuse. Controls are ambidextrous at the bolt catch, magazine catch, and safety. A conventional rear charging handle sits with a steel non-reciprocating side handle on the handguard, so you can press-check or clear a stoppage without breaking the firing grip. The trigger is the Matchlite Duo curved unit on a standard AR-15 fire control group, which means a later trigger swap is an ordinary parts job. The handguard is a free-float M-LOK rail. Each gun ships with one 30-round polymer magazine.

Pair the top rail with a compact red dot from the catalog and keep the can on 1/2x28. The G3 is a host, not a closed system. Build it in the rifle builder once you pick pistol, SBR, or the 16-inch Mohawk.

The 16-inch SIG516 G3 Mohawk is the same G3: short-stroke piston, adjustable gas, full ambi, dual charging handles, Matchlite Duo, free-float M-LOK, SIG flash hider-compensator. It lists at $1,999.99, 7.7 lb, and 36.5 inches extended / 33 inches collapsed. The 11.5 pistol cuts that to 7 lb and 30.3 inches extended. You give up velocity and you pick up blast. You also pick up the length that fits a truck cab, a hallway, and a can without turning the gun into a 16-inch rifle with a suppressor hanging off it.

Piston weight is the standing G3 tax. On a 16-inch carbine that tax buys you cleaner suppressed running and an adjustable valve you may not need if you already run a flow-through can on a DI gun. On an 11.5 it buys you a factory-tuned short piston that does not dump the extra gas into the carrier. If your use is a home-defense AR or a suppressed short gun, the 11.5 is the G3 that matches the job. If your use is a general-purpose 16-inch rifle, stay on the Mohawk and spend the difference on ammo and a can.

Factory SKU P516G3-556N-11B ships as a Title I pistol with a Magpul BSL brace and transfers on a 4473 with a NICS check. Federal courts vacated the 2023 brace rule, and ATF proposed removing that language in May 2026. Classification still turns on whether the specific firearm is designed and intended to be fired from the shoulder, so keep the factory brace and pistol lower as shipped. Fitting a stock to that lower without an approved Form 1 makes an SBR.

The 11.5 SBR is the NFA gun. A dealer transfer still needs an approved Form 4 even though the NFA tax went to $0 on January 1, 2026. Fingerprints, CLEO notification, NICS, and registration all still apply. If you already own the pistol and want a stock on it, that path is a Form 1 on the lower.
