Illinois Magazine Capacity Limit

Illinois uses different thresholds by firearm type: section 24-1.10 defines a large-capacity device above 10 rounds for a long gun and above 15 rounds for a handgun. The definition also reaches a combination of parts from which such a device can be assembled, while excluding .22 rimfire tubular devices, lever-action tubular magazines, and permanently inoperable devices.

The pre-January 10, 2023 possession provision limits where a retained device may be kept or used and specifies the permitted transfer recipients. Unlike the assault-weapon provision, the magazine grandfather paragraph does not require an endorsement affidavit.

There is no federal magazine capacity limit; the 1994 federal assault weapons ban expired in 2004.
