Colorado Magazine Limit: 15 Rounds

Colorado Revised Statutes section 18-12-301 defines a large-capacity magazine as a fixed or detachable magazine, box, drum, feed strip, or similar device capable of accepting, or designed to be readily converted to accept, more than 15 rounds. It also covers a fixed tubular shotgun magazine holding more than 28 inches of shells and a detachable shotgun magazine holding more than eight shells when combined with a fixed magazine, and it excludes a device permanently altered to hold 15 rounds or fewer, an attached .22 caliber rimfire tubular device, and a tubular magazine in a lever-action firearm.

Section 18-12-302 lets a person keep a magazine owned on July 1, 2013 if continuous possession has been maintained. Once a defendant asserts that exception, the prosecution has the burden of refuting it.

There is no federal magazine capacity limit; the 1994 federal assault weapons ban expired in 2004.
