Massachusetts Magazine Capacity Limit

Massachusetts General Laws chapter 140, section 121 defines a large-capacity feeding device as one that accepts, or can readily be converted to accept, more than 10 rounds or more than five shotgun shells. It also reaches parts that can be assembled into such a device when controlled by the same person.

Section 131M now confines the pre-September 13, 1994 exception to specified private property, a licensed dealer or gunsmith for repair, a licensed range or competition venue, and unloaded locked transport between those places. Transfers are limited to an heir or devisee, an out-of-state resident, or a licensed dealer.

There is no federal magazine capacity limit; the 1994 federal assault weapons ban expired in 2004.
