Legal
No. No magazine capacity limit; sale and possession of any-capacity magazines are lawful.
The statute in practice
Idaho Code section 18-3302J states the Legislature's intent to wholly occupy the field of firearms regulation. Except as expressly authorized by state statute, it bars local laws, rules, ordinances, executive orders, or policies that regulate the sale, acquisition, transfer, ownership, possession, transportation, carrying, or storage of firearms or any element relating to firearms and components, including ammunition. Counties and cities may regulate firearm discharge within listed limits, and the section leaves in place local authority over the location and construction of sport shooting ranges. A 2026 amendment added a $10,000 civil penalty for each willful violation and a cause of action against violating jurisdictions.
Federal law
There is no federal magazine capacity limit; the 1994 federal assault weapons ban expired in 2004.
Federal baseline verified 2026-10-20. Scope: Detachable magazine round-count restrictions for handguns and long guns. States not listed have no capacity limit.
Common questions
No. No magazine capacity limit; sale and possession of any-capacity magazines are lawful.
What to buy
Where state law sets no capacity cap, a proven 30-round AR magazine is the practical baseline. These picks prioritize reliable feed geometry, durable bodies, and replacement availability over novelty capacity.
